Very good book, I liked everything about it, a bit outdated but still a great book! I would recommend it if you like to cook or as the title suggests, please your husband.
At first, I was wondering about the title of the book, but the more I read it, the more I love it! It is a great read and love the recipes. The chapters are wonderful, the characters are very homey.
As a purely historical / cultural thing full marks recipes are a bit basic
Good to be living in 2018
A fun and I'm sure imaginary look at the past. First published in 1917, this is a culinary look at Bettina's first year of marriage. The thousand ways to please a husband are recipes, interspersed with a storyline of Bettina and Bob. Bettina makes jam, gives a wedding shower for a friend, and so on.
For me, this was a trot down memory lane, since I loved my mother's original copy. The cover put me off, thugh.Although I don't go back quite to 1917, much of this was evocative of The Olden Days. My mother's copy was well-used and a perfect way to start cooking for a household of 2, with occasional parties and entertainments. The book is also a portrait of social (not society) life in the early 20th century, combined with the then-conventional view of women. My mother's copy is long gone and this is for one of my daughters.
"Remember, all measurements are level" was, for some cooks, a novel idea in those days.
When my mother married in 1946 she had no cooking skills. Her mother gave her a copy of A Thousand Ways to Please a Husband in hopes that she would be able to nourish the future lawyer (frankly, I don't think food was their main motivation). I lost my Mom, age 91, in 2015. I searched and searched her house for this cookbook, finally finding it deep in the back of a cabinet. I had read the stories many times as a young girl and thought Bettina was purely fabulous. In adulthood she seems the ultimate condescending twit. No matter. It is ultimately the connection to my mother that makes me love this book and its heroine regardless. SOME of the recipes are good and at least disregard the Betty Crocker school of home economics, using canned soups, etc. Maybe sentimentality is required for 5 stars. )
Love reading hundred year old ways of cooking/baking. Some unusual ingredients. Some practical tips that are useful today.
